From Risk to Resilience: Pre-Treatment Clinical Intervention for Persons Affected By Eating Disorders And Their Loved Ones

Presenting with: Kristin Agar, LCSW, CEDS, CAI, CIP

Description: It is often very challenging to convince those who have eating disorders into treatment. Using clinical intervention before treatment admission by engaging family and friends to get the person help is highly effective. Properly facilitated, this can be the start of healing for the entire family system in which trust, integrity and values have been compromised. Once the person agrees to treatment, safe transport without additional trauma is a must with this complex, medically compromised population. Continuing care for their loved ones is equally important to promote healing for all moving forward.

Strengthening Family Resilience: Integrating Clinical Interventionists in Eating Disorder Treatment

Co-Panelists: Kristin Agar, LCSW, CEDS, CAI, CIP and Bonnie Brennan, LPC, CEDS-C, CAI

Description: This panel of Clinical Eating Disorder Interventionists will explore the role of interventionists in facilitating treatment admission, family engagement, and sustained recovery. It will address myths surrounding treatment, such as the belief that intervention is only effective for patients seeking help voluntarily, and clarify the non-coercive, collaborative approach interventionists take with patients and families. The panel will also define key components of clinical interventions, including safety, treatment planning, and aftercare, while highlighting the long-term benefits of family involvement in recovery. Research, case studies, and best practices will be shared to support these strategies.

Perception vs. Reality: The Inner Struggle of Body Dysmorphia

The content of the presentation will go through diagnostic criteria and symptomology associated with Body Dysmorphic Disorder. It will differentiate BDD from symptoms of similar mental health issues and address treatment strategies and outcomes.

Levels of Care: Eating Disorder Treatment

This 3-hour presentation will cover the evidence-based practices and treatment modalities for each level of care for eating disorders. This will include appraisal for what level of care is indicated for an individual and the ethics behind providing the right referral recommendation.

Strategies for Recovery: Influencing Loved Ones to Start Treatment

The belief that someone must want treatment to benefit from it overlooks a key symptom of eating disorders: denial of the problem. This denial can make it challenging for family and friends to encourage a loved one to seek treatment. As a result, tensions may rise, and strained relationships can be further tested by difficult conversations or seemingly harsh ultimatums. This presentation aims to equip attendees with strategies to use both leverage and love to demonstrate to their loved one that the positive outcomes of recovery far outweigh the negative consequences of their eating disorder.
